In this post I talk about the software that powers this website, Blot, and why I chose to use it.

What is Blot?

Blot is a cheap, dead simple blogging platform that powers this website. What makes it great is that you simply point it at a folder of Markdown files in your Dropbox or Github Repository and it publishes them instantly. I believe Google Drive access is being added soon, but at the time of this posting it has not been added yet. Blot has much less overhead than WordPress and is easy to theme.

What is Markdown?

Created in 2004 by John Gruber and Aaron Swartz, Markdown is a lightweight markup language for creating formatted text using a plain-text editor. You can write Markdown in any text editor if you understand the syntax, but there are a few apps that help with process. On Windows I use app called Typora, but on my Mac and iPad, I use an app called Drafts, but the beauty of Markdown is that you could get away with using Text Edit if you wanted to.

If all you need is a place to put your thoughts online without all the bloat of a million different plugin or theme options, then I highly recommend that you take a look a Blot.
